Edmonia Lewis, Sculptor (1844-1907)

First African American sculptor to achieve international prominence.  Born in upstate New York, Lewis moved to Italy and sculpted in a neoclassical style.  Her most famous work is

Forever Free (1867), which depicts two formerly enslaved people freed from their shackles.
